Assessment/Progression Workshop:

The goal of the KTLS assessment and exercise progression is to provide the health and fitness professional with the theories and guidelines for assessing and prescribing exercises to their clients.

Test and Measurement Section: During this section of the lecture we will address the following issues:

  1. PAR-Q
    1. What is a PAR-Q
    2. Why is it important in assessment
  2. Blood Pressure
    1. How do you accurately find the Systolic and Dystolic pressure
    2. Why is this important
  3. Heart rate
    1. Where to take the heart rate and why.
    2. Why you should not take the carotid artery during or post exercise
  4. Skin fold calibers
    1. How to measure accurately
    2. Which side and sites you need to measure

Exercise Progression Section:
Common question: Why start your clients in stabilization training before strength training?

Stabilization Training Level 1
The key is to build neuromuscular efficiency in all planes of motion. This is done by developing the communication between the nervous system and muscular systems by training the body in a proprioceptive rich environment, which allows the body to work on neuromuscular efficiency.  Just as you build a house on a strong foundation you want to do the same with your body. (This varies from client to client)

Endurance Training Level 2
Once the foundation has been established in the stabilization level you can now progress you client into the endurance training level.  In endurance training we continue to work on the stabilization while increasing the strength in the agonist muscles (prime movers). This is a great level for clients wanting to loose weight.

Hypertrophy Training Level 3
Hypertrophy training looks at how to increase maximal muscle growth. This level of training is focused on high volume with minimal rest period to force muscle cells to increase in overall muscle size. This level of training is not recommended for all your clients mainly those into body building.

Power Training Level 4
Power training is to enhance how your body performs from what your body learned on the last three levels. The goal is to improve the rate of force production.  The client is now focusing on how to use that power acquired in the gym to real life application.
